The Cockettes by David Weissman and Bill Weber
USA / 2003 / B&W and color / 100 minutes / Debut in France
In the presence of the Director, David Weissman
David Weissman and Bill Weber revisit the San Francisco of the late 1960’s and early 70’s with the Cockettes, a mythical hippie group of theatrical performers who embody Gay/Drag psychedelia. Rediscover the flamboyant “Hibiscus” who founded the troupe, which also featured both Divine and disco diva Sylvester. The documentary swings from archive footage and photos to contemporary interviews of former Cockettes as well as their fans like John Waters. The directors go behind the nostalgia of this fabulous era and reinvent those anarchic performers as pioneers of a pop-culture phenomenon.

Arakinema by Nobuyoshi Araki
Japan / B&W and color / © Nobuyoshi Araki © QUEST
Neither a film, nor a slideshow, Arakinema is an entirely new way of presenting photographs. The audience will experience Araki’s work through the photographer’s own unique visual choreography. The hands of Shiro Tamiya and Ansai suspend these photos in an emotional way, allowing viewers to experience the sensual overlap of the images through light while the strains of music join in. In the darkness, one photo will appear through the light and mingle with the music.
KaoRi
(10 minutes)
Light and shadow intertwining. KaoRi and Araki dancing. A tantalizing treat for the senses.
SHIKIIN ME
(20 minutes)
One monochrome picture created out of 9 photos by Araki. These 9 photos are pulled apart and reconfigured to form SHIKIIN ME. They create a labyrinth of color layers - a type of iconostasis, a climb toward perfection.
Kù
(20 minutes)
From May 2 to June 14, ku premiered at the “NOBUYOSHI ARAKI KINBAKU” exhibition at Jablonka Gallery in Berlin. 160 monochrome photos of objects and sceneries from Araki’s surroundings are shown, while the final half continues into images of a rough and textured sky. The breath of Araki resonates within these lifeless objects. A calm and still, but deep and strong, emotion - ku is Araki’s nostalgia on celluloid.
The Saddest Music in the World by Guy Maddin
Canada / 2004 / B&W and color / 99 minutes
With Isabella Rosselini and Maria de Medeiros
The cult film of Guy Maddin has devised a style that evokes old films from an alternate timeline; “The Saddest Music” is not silent, but it looks like a long-lost classic from decades ago, grainy and sometimes faded. A great moment of subversive cinema between surrealism, burlesque, tragedy and melancholy.
